What’s in a name?
The name Bend has its obvious meaning for a yoga studio… sometimes we bend in our practice (just in case it wasn’t as obvious for you). But for Joanne, the name has deeper meaning: When she was a little girl, she and her mother would listen to records together while cleaning the windows, or floors, or because it was Saturday… and one album which got played a lot was “Helen Reddy’s Greatest Hits”. Joanne would listen and sing to I am Woman over and over again. As Joanne got older, she found herself struggling with hard times and found true meaning in the words ‘Yes, I am wise, but it’s wisdom born of pain’ and ‘You can bend, but never break me’. When Joanne was off of work on sick-leave due to situational depression it was yoga that gave her purpose again. It was yoga that made her realize that feeling broken was a choice that she could step out of, with awareness and acceptance. At that point she quit her job in finance and signed up for yoga teacher training. In 2011, when she opened her first studio in North Bay ON, the choice for a name was simple… Bend. The name has it’s obvious double meaning for Joanne, but it also has a double meaning for you: Bend Yoga will certainly do great things for the wellness of your body, but she wants to share more than that: She wants to show you how yoga saved her life.
